The Sweet Coffee Croon

Out the window

A new view

Of a city on the northern end

Sunswept USA

Cloudy holding pattern

On the skies of gray

Friends of one another

Iron clad stories conversations

Happy and sad

Feet popping out of sandals

Summer fires are now past due

Which leaves just me and you

In this cafe

Flipping crisp new pages

A delicate smell of expensive hand wash

Worn about the white room

Back on the open road soon

For now we swoon each other

With mellow mugged coffee to croon sweet into

Holding the World

The pale pastels of the lake

Freshened breath with no mistake

On the horizon a rusted thorn

On the Northwest tip is worn

My home state moves

No chance to hesitate

Offering big tax breaks

For the industrial rake

Tearing up the land

I have yet to ever understand

How we can destroy such beauty

Beauty of our land

The water and the sand

Taken for granted our homeland

I will look out to the lake and wonder

If there is a beauty of fresh water

Upon this earth so mild

It is both mother and child

We must honor the world so

Unless mistakenly

We let it go

The Familiar and Strange

A run in

With the old hood

Unkept feelings brushing in

Like they should

Faces familiar and strange

Somehow the world spins

And the hood stays the same

The coffee is still sweet

With aroma swept out on the streets

I miss and fear this place

Staying in place

Erase time with a new perspective

With my heart strings

All interconnected

We left years ago

To leave behind

The fields of northeast Indiana

Without a plan

We left our lives here

Unchanged and untouched

By the hands of time

A Sweltering Embrace

The long sweat drips down my face

Leaving a trace

A vibrant jet stream

Cooling attempts being made

The sun spares no shade

On a New York City day

People walk carelessly

Trying not to perspire

None at all is desired

The subways bellow a thick

Steam as you enter in

Blowing the summer wind

Not much you can do

To evade

Or catch any shade from the heat

It is a element of highest rank

Infiltrating the smallest space

Under the heat of summer

With a sweltering embrace

Joy: The Elastic Life

Oh the joy of redemption

To give life a exultant expression

When it pushes you to the end

Past the point of a simple bend

To the breaking convex

Not easy but rather complex

It gives back

One small ounce

To help push the mind

From the weathered mounds

The joy that can be felt

When life tries to help you out

Picks you up a bit

After seeing you almost drown

I am happy for these days

To be enjoyed and endured

To see a light in the woods

When all of life seemed unsure

One, Two, Three

‘Up, one, two, three…”

Rest

I wonder how long I can do this

Just maintain

Sustain a healthy life

What about my career

Am I headed in the right direction

Ah f*ck directions

‘Up, one, two, three…”

Rest

I wonder if we will make rent this week

Can we afford to get some food tonight

I am sure we will be alright

Last time I checked we were

‘Up, one, two, three…”

Rest

I can’t believe how sore I am today

Walking over 5 miles a day

It’s a little much

To work and play

But I am tough

I am a New Yorker

‘Up, one, two, three”

Rest

4 workouts in a weeks

Trying to keep my body in peak shape

Just for the strength I need

To carry on life

To make progess where I thought

I could make none

Back

‘Up, one, two, three…”

Coffee Velvet

The velvet blue seats

Set adjacent to the table circles

Whirled with oak floors

The Brooklyn Coffee Shop

Full of headphones and beat up leather shoes

Glass windows giant to see through

I await my wife

In the Empire State

Under a sign that reads

Toby’s Estate

Unattainable Repose

The elusive ghost

Chased through streets

Competing with our hands

Feet

Mouths open and close

Drifting words hung

Before the evening repose

This unattainable drifting ghost

My soul collapses on Wednesday

To only renew the next day

The brittleness of surviving

Well below the standards of

Living well and thriving

Conniving thoughts land soft

When arriving

Then dismissed in the thought abyss

Of carrying on

This day I just long for easy nights

Well rested then feeling alright

Keeping the feelings down

In my mind

In time

I will find

A rhyme of words

To keep me ahead

Instead of walking

Flying

In moments of desperation

It’s feet ahead

Eyes wide open

To just keep on trying

Vast Land Appeal

The country mind

Somehow growing up dreaming of the city

The bright lights

Open all night

The bustle of people

And feeling alright

Yet differently

How the city mind

Grows up dreaming of the country fields

Wind swept

Vast land appeal

There is no perfect remedy to this deal

For one desires the other

For the other can never be

What the city life provides

The country life will never be

So fill life full with many experiences

Long for the city

Long for the fields

The experiences we gain

We be our minds true yield

A City Cup

The delicate bliss

Of chlorine

Mixed with a mild coffee bean

Acidic and complex

Every element sampled and contained

The foggy windows from a morning rain

Even the exhaust from the street

Owns a part all the same

The complexity of a coffee in Brooklyn

Is yet a bit more tedious

You can feel this

Sweet berry high notes

With cleaning residue

Somehow city coffee is just

As good as you can do

From drops off the grinds

To a coffee cup warm and kind

City coffee is it’s own sampling

Of all the air fresh and old

A city cup

Hearty and bold
