Friendship

Many ships set sail at night

Setting sale in the winter

Protecting the sailors from

The evening’s blight

We have shared many meals

In this life

Made some jokes

And done alright

Friendship is a ship built together

Keeping us free from the blasts of the outer world weather

This ship has sailed for years

Our hearts have learned

Loved

Refined

Cheers glasses

And dined

From New York to Los Angeles

Bloomington to Fort Wayne

Our friendship is similar to back then

But not quite the same

Just as the weather can alter a boat

Over the years

So has our lives altered course over time

But it is true friendship that remains

At the core we are still the same

As when we boarded the ship of friendship

As reluctant strangers

We are now bound together

Friends all the same

Choosing Joy

Choices are made

Daily

Frequently

Momentarily

Temporary

Permanent

But one choice is definitive

Never to be made again

Choosing joy is a choice

That can survive the thick and thin

This infrequent gesture must be checked

As frequently as the mind can remember

That the truth is joy is not easy

Not instantaneous

Not always joyous

But mandatory

To choose joy over an erroneous option

There is a reason for such joy

Substantiated joy

The feeling of a mild sunset

Crimson in its beauty and restlessness

That joy must be felt from the heart

Exclaimed in the throat

And shared with other willing hearts

Joy is not a good find

Kept in one’s own heart

One’s own mind

Joy is a friend sharing a conversation

Joy is love overflowing

Flowing from one heart to another

Remembering that a life lived

Is giving and never knowing

Twin Flames

Twin flames reach up to the sky

Stretched out like two Great Danes

A wry gesture to a waning night

Love burns in his heart

For her

For love

For good

Souls entangled in this life together

No matter the weather

The twin flames reach for the sky

Day and night

The wind has no hope to blight this fire

For 24 hours a day

Blazing as if fed by turpentine

Love is fed by action

Defined not by material

But the ethereal

The twin flames

Him and her

Love

Set Now I Sit

A renewed time for optimism

Skepticism

Pessimism

What “ism” should we implore

Tied together and bound to the tracks

What we have lost in hope

Our empathy lacks

From the top to the bottom

Of the stack

I wish more for 2017

A new goal with a new vision

Unity and prosperity

Over division

How to get there I am uncertain

A thick curtain pulled over the stage

Stage set

Set now I sit

Waiting the coming performance

Brawny Winter Night

A brawny evening

Bold with winter folds

Cold

Unnerved

Holidays season is upon us

Yet this year there lacks a certain

Gusto

Who knows

Maybe it’s me

Maybe it’s the weather

Whether or not it is me

Or the other

The season of change is upon us it seems

Ready to brake at the seems

What it all seems is

Off

Just another brawny winter night

The Ragged Carriage

We are carried in the carriage

Ragged and old

We must find new wheels

New axels

Our carriage can’t carry

Us much longer

Not like this

We are going to break the carriage

Disparage

Can we please fix the carriage

Think of the Solution

I will arise

Arise in the morning

Arise to the challenge

Lie awake at night

Thinking of solutions

My own illusion

Conclusions

Never quite reached

In a hope of making a plan

To build a house

Upon a great heap of sand

So I run

Sleep

Run

Disconnect; We are Not There Yet

Lead the leaders

All I can hear is a president

Who is not presently

Our president

So much proclamations

But he has yet to take the helm

Of our great nation

I am not discouraged

For my love of country can stay strong

It is greater than one man’s toy

Deliberation

But enough of the bombast already

We still have a month

Of normal life before we have to deal with

Public displays of hatred and deceit

Come on

Turn off the TV

Disconnect the phone

Lies and misogyny roam

So I will do my part to just disconnect

Recollect

And focus on something new

Pray

Some pray for a raise

Some pray for a new car

Some pray for more things

Some for the night

Some pray to just stay alive

Some pray for a new insight

Some pray for power

Some pray for spring flowers

Some pray for the weather

While some pray for water

Pray for me

Pray for you

Pay to pray

On the radios too

Raise your hands for love

Raise your hands for awareness

Raise your hands to raise fund

Just raise your hands for fun

On the radio the ads blare

Telling us “BEWARE”

But to continue to pray

Pray

Pray

Scribble of a Stranger

Scribble of a stranger

No more similar than an unknown danger

Glistening on a November afternoon

The acoustics pronounced now

And fill the room

The wrong approach with the wrong tenor

On a Sunday evening I sent her

The notes of my love

Gentle free falling dove

Now in a moments reflection

Over the fence

Where the homeless used to live

A new breed of life rises up from the dark

Victorious in its wailings

Building new wings for sailing

The ingredients have baked to perfection

Or rather imperfection

While I uncover more hope than I realized

Through the eyes of a bird I now realize

Push on when the push is almost out

That is when it is needed most
