Take Me To The Turn

Embrace the challenge

Of golf and it’s bitter edges

Take me to the turn

And start again

From the summer grass

Cut in the early hours

To the tee box setup in the light

Turn the day into a light of hope

Take on the joy of the game

Everyday

Dogleg Left

To the dogleg left

On the side of the hill

With a pond easy sitting

At the edge of the chance

To take up the summer light

In the setting fit for a new eye

I see the golf course awake today

Sitting up in the dew to say again

How is the morning set in a glisten

The birds call out to those who will listen

And see the light of the day set upon their skin

The Morning Dew

The morning dew

Sets easy upon the summer grass

Fresh cut

With the chickens calling in the distance

The leafs bursting through with summer life

To take upon the golf course

Just after night

Refreshed the day

As a clean show will make

The summer sun glisten

Over the ponds of Elbel’s view

On the west end of South Bend

The golf course sets easy

Upon the land that lays simple and true

The Course Where I Grew Up

Down on Miami Street

By the old bookstore

The grass grows stronger in the spring

Than anywhere else

On the golf course of the city

Where time is on repeat

The dandelion haze slips into the summer

Of heat and sun

Under the clubhouse

Is where it all begun

A love of a game

The idea so simple yet execution endlessly imperfect

I learned to grow up on these hills

These greens

Taught me how to be a man

To be polite

I owe many days to Erskine

To the scorecards that have been discarded

And the memories kept

Where I spent time with my father

And learned that a game can teach us

A lot more than how to swing

But rather how to live and be present

In a world that just keeps falling away

Where the Wild Light Waits

Beyond the fresh grass

Of spring

And the decay of winter

The blue of spring

And summer

Awaits the

Moment

Beyond the trees

And in the thick of the rough

The wild light waits

To bring the fervor of

Another

Summer day

To the course

And to the game

On the Course

Falling asleep on my lap
On the course
A nap is needed for strength
I run my fingers through he hair
The rain falls splashing soft on cracked pavement
Skies loom large and fly
Clouds passing in summers haste
Laid in bed for an hour wide awake
Continuum of emotion and freedom
Taken with hope and reason
The rain falls soft on my legs and arm
Winds bring cold air
And afternoon charm
All I could ask for lays in my hands
Caressing hair soft brown and sweet
Under the shade of a Michigan pine
Is one of life’s great treats
Complete with feeling of love and understanding
Taking a break from a brisk walk
Relax and sleep while we talk
A Wednesday filled with summers course
I love her as she sleeps just a bit more

The Old Car

The old car is still hanging in
making it through Winter’s thick and Summers thin
The AC rattles
the carpets are worn out
But the motor still delivers me to the destination
very devout
The weather is broken in
The locks don’t work and haven’t for days
The radio still sings out a couple of melodies
But when the wheels struggle up the hill it gets my sympathy
on a warm day in June
When the engine is ringing out
In it’s classic tune
Bellowing out like a great monsoon
This is my car and I stand by it
Even though the dollars I’ve paid have been multiplying
But it is a true beauty and I ain’t lying That’s all I have to say about this your car
It’s taken me miles and miles afar
The dream alive when I get down
We’ve toured we’ve laughed we’ve cried
In this cabin we lived our lives
So this car I say cheers
I hope you may live on for years and years
