Mr. and Mrs. Particular

This is a story about a band name that we still laugh about to this day. Our first attempts to name our band were pretty rough. But this one in particular is funny still because it captures who we were once upon a time. Enjoy!

Mr. and Mrs. Particular

This is an emblem of what we once were

No longer do they exist

Vanished into the darkness and mist

Sent them off to the valleys and mountains

Never to be seen again

Every once and again we think of them

How everything seemed perfect back then

The sun would come up in the east

And settle in the west

In simple naivety we would live

It was all we knew

We thought it to be the best

Through travels and experience

We realized our views were much less

Then second best

We had grand ideas and no way to achieve

So the best option was for us to have them leave

So we packed up their things

And gave them our best wishes

We were both so young but willing to change

I never would have thought how things felt

Oh but so strange

And new

And confusing

This whole idea of changing was quite amusing

Even after we packed up everything in the van

There was one thought that came back

Again and again

What if we never find our way back

What if we let go and want our old selves back

We looked at each other and began to say

It seemed we were quoting each other

So we just stopped

Both of us felt the same way

Elkhart’s Eternal Flame

Late night band practice in Goshen, IN led to a midnight drive to South Bend. Even at the late hour you can see the flame burning off of the highway in Elkhart. It reminds me of how that thing burns 24/7 and how we are filling it with every step that we take. So this is a short poem about where it all took me.

Elkhart’s Eternal Flame

Elkhart’s Eternal Flame

Lights my mind up every time

Drives me insane

The heap of garbage burning bright

The smell that seeps out

Lets you know something’s not right

Trash carving it’s way in Midwest trees

Coming from all over the land

From the mountains and the seas

Landfills in Indiana seem to run a plenty

Follow your nose and you will find

One, two, and oh so many

As with all trash it must be disposed

Where exactly it goes

I can’t say anyone really knows

But on a Tuesday night the flame glows

On highway 20 when you see it

You will know

Blue flickers orange pops red in too

Depending on where the wind blows

Is where all the scent blows to

Racing over fields and famers

Streams and trees

Through our nostrils

Into you and me

Into our lungs and through our livers

Into your soul giving you shivers

Into our blood

Through the water that we drink

Bubbling up through the faucets and the sinks

Shame should fill the hearts of the waste

But toss it in the trash

And don’t really face it

The next time you waste

All the trash that you disclaim

I may see it burning one day

In Elkhart’s Eternal Flame

Futile to Fertile

Spring is right around the corner. On a warm spring day this came to me as I relished in the final days of winter. Those days are some of my favorite of the year. Enjoy!

Winter days fade

Into spring

Quiet mornings

Where the birds

Sing

The final snow

Begins to melt

And fade away

Winter is moving out

And

Must be on its way

For today

I admire

The winter cold

Windy gnarly

And brutal

My attempts to leave the Midwest

Always seem to be

Futile

Until the fertile lands

Of spring bloom

Once again

Bring back

Warmth and summers moon

All of this will be back

Very soon

And soon indeed

It will bring me joy

A young child

With a brand new toy

To run around under the sun

My heart swells

When it is warm

How the feelings come back to me

On this winters morn’

Political Constipation

This is a poem inspired by the absolute ridiculousness of political grid lock. I care not for a side and for no person – but for the overall lack of enthusiasm to work as a whole unit. In a way that the body can only truly function if it all works together. I am not sure where all of this shit is going to take us, but my optimism is waning. I wrote this as much for the humor as for the literal sense. I tried to capture the disgust for which I feel
for the current situation. Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t, but I enjoyed trying! Enjoy!

Upon us is The Great Sequestration!

Ode to the amazing political constipation!

This is no nation of procrastination and indignation!

But rather a great land

Of sensation and flirtation

With capitalism

And now possible stagnation!

The political bowel filled with dense matter

And the while the belly of the great nation

Grows fatter and fatter

But who really wants to ask

What is the matter?

Surely it can’t be

An infection of the bladder

It is the anus

Filled and discontent

No one wants to work

To lift the great clog

The almighty circumvent!

To move past political lines

Dine of much higher fair, politicians

The real moving kind

The sledge of procrastination

Must be cast into the toilet bowl

Worry not if it will over flow

It is time for change

Of the diet we consume

Must surely change

Grow and support

Greater endeavors

But it can not be just some broke ass poet

Who can be oh so clever

Ask yourself today

What are you willing to do for tomorrow

To cast away this fowl sorrow

To stitch the times that have grown to divide

And I will surely be

On your side

Jerk of my Emotion

Dreaming of a luscious tropical escape – in the midst of a cold spell in the midwest. It was fun to escape the mind to this place, only to be pulled back to the bittersweet Indiana town. Never the less indulge yourself for just a couple of moments – read it twice for a return to your escape and then pull yourself back and feel refreshed – i think… Enjoy!

Bout time

Out of sight

Out of mind

In the right

Or in the wrong

Sing it summer love

In a similar song

Sitting in a boat

Upon the wide ocean

Tug of the sea

A jerk of my emotion

Keep singing on and on

Bitterness so sweet

In part to a song

Birds fly by with careful craft

The water laps the boat

Trickles down

Warming laugh

Oceans are miles away

Settled into winters gray

But thoughts can wonder

And surely do

Over oceans wide

Of summers dew

My mind is peaceful

Hopeful content

Winter will soon follow

Where summer had went

Fast folding packing every season

You must hold fast for every reason

The snow will melt upon sunshine beams

Winters embrace will fall apart

And burst at the seems

But for now I will relinquish

In winter sleep

For as it is now

This optimism

I surely must keep

A Floral Confit or Rose Scented Turpentine

Pink and green

Seaweed green

Sunset pink

With a cup of water to drink

Bent glass in subtle ways

The beauty lasts for only days

Velvet touch

Burnt under glow

Pedal gentle

Summer tone

Resting peacefully

Under gravity’s pull

Drink the water

Until the stem is full

Grasping life

With both hands

Passing time

With falling sand

The clock calls out

With subtle hues

But brings great joy

Until it’s time is due

But with beauty laughter

And laughter joy

Summers gift

Nature’s toy

Time is not infinite

Space not confined

Rose scented turpentine

Joy and fresh

These are the treats

From the flower blooms

Upon eyes a floral confit

A Friends Place

This was written about a recent stay that we, my fiance and myself, made out to LA to see one of my best friends from high school. In addition to being an extremely selfless and giving host – his place was so beautiful and relaxing. It was an amazing escape for what is a crazy city of LA. We had such a peaceful and relaxing time hanging with friends and just kicking it by his indoor fire. It was truly a great experience – I hope this can take you there for just a moment. Enjoy!

A friends place

Can be as warm

And comforting

As the human embrace

With a makeshift bed

A simple place to sleep

All is well

When your livin’ cheap

But with every moment

Passing through these eyes

The sun in the morning

The evening skies

I notice the faces

Smiling all around

A humble abode

In this huge town

Shared towels

And washing machines

Life is so sweet

In these passing scenes

We get in late

Hitch a ride

Made it to LA

And it is about time

Crisp air

And summers familiar

I would take anything like this

Or anything similar

The morning we go for food

Meet some friends

Call some more

To meet at days end

Faces familiar

From a time ago

But we are still connected

Wherever we go

We enjoy a fire

Snapping soft and sweet

It makes for an easy

Evening treat

Life is simple

When sharing sustains

Can even take away

Some of life’s pains

Thank you can not match

It just falls short

You can’t just say

You’ve been a good sport

The city scene

Has been nice to me

A friend to host

With all sincerity

We made our way back home now

Hope to be back through

But for now

The only thing we have to say

Is thank you
